That would sound almost too ambitious.except that BioWare itself has authored some of the most popular single-player role-playing games in recent years, including 2003's Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. This new game, in development at BioWare's Austin, Texas studio, will attempt to combine the vast exploration and social networking of a massively multiplayer game with the in-depth, character-driven story of a single-player role-playing game. It looks like the latest Kylo Ren comic also references the High Republic era, which may be yet another clue to the next film’s setting.Although most massively multiplayer games offer gigantic worlds full of monsters to kill, treasures to find, monsters to kill, and even more monsters to kill, developer BioWare is going in a different direction with Star Wars: The Old Republic. There’s no reason Star Wars can’t become as rich and diverse a narrative playground as the MCU.
But even if that rumor isn’t true, at least it sounds like Disney and Lucasfilm are headed in the right direction in terms of format and overall franchise restructuring.
In any case, the High Republic era sounds very cool.
Will we also see some new shows and films that takes place after Episode IX? It would be surprising if we didn’t. We know we’re getting an Obi-Wan Kenobi series starring Ewan McGregor and a Cassian Andor series starring Diego Luna. I can’t imagine we’ll only go to the past, of course, especially with Mando and baby Yoda and the various other characters established in the new films. As The Mandalorian proves, that can be done to great effect even within the Skywalker era. Just taking a break from the whole Skywalker story is going to be the most important piece of the puzzle, as it really is high time for Star Wars to move outside its comfort zone. Having that universe stretch between TV and movies, and take place across different eras opens up all kinds of possibilities. I really like the idea of a Star Wars Expanded Universe that links movies together in a loose web rather than a bunch of trilogies, though if the MCU is any indication you can do both at the same time.
